The most enjoyable part of Architecture School was the Design Studio classes in which we built most of the models for our designs. In the first year, the Design Studio class was Monday through Friday 1 PM to 4 PM. Upon progressing to second year, Design Studio classes were held on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 1 PM to 5 PM. The scheduled Design Studio class was just the tip of the iceberg to completing really thorough designs and building very complex and beautiful models. This required us students, to spend an enormous amount of time outside of the scheduled class hours. My love for Model Making existed even before I got into Architecture School, but this formative out-of-class studio time, served to enhance that passion within. As a student, I got to design an array of projects and buildings, and crafting scaled models for my designs would always be an informative and enjoyable exercise. Most of the models in my academic as well as my professional career were built the old-fashioned way, completely by hand. However, my college was an early adopter of technology, such as laser cutting and 3-D printing, which helped in the labor of model making.
