Junkyard Scaled Model Build

This model of a junkyard was a hybrid of concept, existing geometry, and representative geometry. I am very proud of this model because I built it early in the production process before I visited the site. It was a synthesis of research, technical ability, and experience. I had to use a series of survey photos taken on scouts by the Production Designer. The next step in my workflow was to capture the terrain from Google Earth and scale it to a usable, accurate scale. The process then involved researching the machines I identified in the photographs and getting scales from sources such as the manufacturers’ websites. This enabled me to scale heavy equipment such as; Cranes, Forklifts, Conveyor belts, etc. To create the model. I also created scaled objects such as; cars, SUVs, trailers, and dumpsters to be part of the landscape. Early in the process I also decided on a color coding system that would serve to categorize objects within the set for planning purposes. Objects such as stacks of vehicles and trailers were easily movable to aid in planning by the Production Designer, and meetings with various departments to discuss shaping this landscape into the set needed for the desired shots.
