I consider the profession of Art Directing as the art of synthesizing all the elements needed to produce the physical scenery seen on screen. Art Direction encompasses the skill of taking direction from both ends of the spectrum in the hierarchy of production and creating something wonderful and coherent. From the upper reaches of the production hierarchy, you’re receiving directives from the Production Designer, the creative cohorts of Writers and Directors, the executive cohorts of Producers, Line Producer, Studio Executives, etc. From the other end of the hierarchy that you supervise directly, you’ll receive creative results that you have personally guided your team towards. You receive drawings from Set Designers, graphics produced by Graphic Designers, budgets and timelines from the Construction crafts, Looks and logistical information from the Set Dec department. You will perform research and disperse that research to guide your team in the right direction. Working with outside vendors when needed to source materials and hardware as needed. I consider the coalescence of all these various moving parts into stage sets and location environments ready to be inhabited by Actors, and shot by filmmakers as the Art of Art Direction.
