West Georgia Correctional Facility - Walking Dead Prison

Early in my Set Design career, I got to work on one of the most exciting sets I have worked on to this day. I got an opportunity to work on an entire prison complex. The entire studio lot essentially became a prison campus. The stages were clad to look like the exterior of prison buildings. I was able to use my skills and knowledge of SketchUp to model the entire prison complex. Including a damaged portion of the prison which became critical to a scene in the storyline. this was also the first time I got to coordinate with the Visual Effects Department. I had several meetings with them, kept them abreast of my drawings, and eventually I handed off my digital model to the Visual Effects Department. They then built upon my digital model, to the results that were eventually seen on screen. I was also able to be of immense value to the Production Designer early in the process by taking his scout photographs and hand sketches and producing a Photoshop comp of what the prison would look like from the vantage point of a character within the story. I was also able to put my Architectural background and training to work by building a physical model of the prison for purposes of meetings and discussions with Directors and other crew.
